Good Afternoon! Hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful autumn weather we are having on this Monday afternoon! Get out and enjoy this, if you get a chance, because our next rain maker is knocking at the door. Shower and thunderstorm chances enter the forecast for late Tuesday. Those chances increase as we head into the evening hours on Tuesday. It's not entirely out of the question to see an isolated strong storm, with gusty winds and small hail. Not expecting any widespread severe storms.
Rainfall amounts will average anywhere from a quarter to a half inch across our coverage area of southern Illinois, southern Indiana, western, north and south central Kentucky. Isolated higher amounts closer to one inch, will be possible with any heavier showers and storms.
High Temperatures behind the front are currently projected to reach the upper 50's to near 60 across the region. But if we get those clouds to linger around longer, highs across southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western and south central Kentucky will get pushed back to the lower and middle 50's. Further east towards the Louisville area, temperatures could hold closer to 50 if those clouds do linger longer. Overnight lows dipping down into the middle 40's for Tuesday night. Middle and upper 30's Wednesday night, with some patchy frost possible.
A rather active pattern is setting up for late in the weekend, into early parts of next week. A strong low to mid level jet stream will move over the region, just ahead of a cold front and a strong area of low pressure northwest of the area. Dew Points will climb into the 60's in the warm sector. We'll have to keep an eye on how things evolve over time. At this time, heavy rainfall will be the main hazard. The WSI severe index is showing some severe potential late Sunday into Monday. Again, a lot will depend on how all of this evolves over the next several days, as there is a lot of uncertainty this far out. NWS Paducah does make mention of some potential for strong storms late Sunday into Monday. So we will certainly monitor the data over the next several days. Right now, heavy rainfall looks like the main potential hazard.
As a reminder, we are in our Fall severe weather season. Fall storms can and have produced damaging storms. Some can be more potent than Spring storms. We suggest purchasing a NOAA Weather Radio, if you don't have one.
